Oakbrook Ashley Riverfest

Summerville Journal Scene, May 2014

Gilmore Girls was one of my favorite television shows growing up. The charming, small town feel of Stars Hollow, reminds me of my hometown. No matter how much Summerville has grown over the years, we’ve managed to maintain our small town feel. For those who have grown up here, it’s very much an everybody knows everybody kind of place. Part of this strong community identity comes from the constant events that happen around town that bring people together. This year a newly founded Oakbrook Civic Association planned a new event centered around the areas largest, untapped resource, the Ashley River and the Oakbrook community that surrounds it.

The first ever Oakbrook Ashley Riverfest was held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Jessen Boat Landing & Colonial Dorchester State Park. I worked with the event planning committee and a graphic designer to create the event program. The program was inserted and distributed in the Summerville Journal Scene with extra copies printed to be handed out on the day of the festival. My involvement included assessing the client’s needs, organizing the content, writing a few pieces, collecting relevant photos, creating sponsor advertisements, brainstorming a design concept and editing the final product.

Here is the finished product:

Interactive vacation page

Summerville Journal Scene, September 2013

I’m fortunate enough to work for an out-of-the-boxer thinker that always pushes our team to develop creative solutions to fit the unique needs of our clients while staying in line with our brand.

For the last few weeks, I’ve been working to develop an interactive “Vacation” page. This unique sponsorship opportunity connects participating local businesses with the community they serve through reader submitted photos that will appear in both print and online. There are three sponsor positions available that include a mix of online advertisements, print advertisements, and social media promotion. The product itself includes an interactive map updated in real-time, a photo gallery of user submitted photos, and a print component in the newspaper to run a minimum of once per month.

This product will drive over $13,000 of new revenue over the course of 12 months.

My Role

  • Consulted with local businesses to determine their needs and get their feedback on the idea of this product.
  • Taking those needs into account, I monetized this product by developing three sponsorship packages at price points that would be attractive to our market.
  • Worked with an interactive specialists who executed the back-end development of the web pages.
  • Collaborated with an in-house graphic designer to create the sales collateral, print advertisement spec, and online promotional banner ads.
  • Presented the product to the other members of my sales team and to potential sponsorship candidates.

Palmetto Primary Care Physicians Player of the Week

Summerville Communications, 2012

One of my clients, Palmetto Primary Care Physicians, is the 2012 sponsor of Player of the Week. Player of the Week is a unique weekly contest presented by The Summerville Journal Scene, The Gazette and the Berkeley Independent. The sponsorship is a combination of print and online advertising, in addition to social media promotion.

My role in the beginning was to coordinate with web developers and graphic designers to create the webpage template and print promotional ads. For the duration of the 12 week contest my role will be to keep the website current each week with new players/winners and to schedule promotional online and print advertisements.
